Professional thief advises how to protect homes

Date Posted: 2002-05-28

Police are warning the public that recently there has been a surge in the number of burglaries and thefts in the prefecture. In order to better advise people how to protect themselves and their property, the police turned to a professional thief currently serving time. The man agreed to write an article that has been published in several newspapers around the nation.

In his article, he said that the first thing he looks when selecting a target is to make sure that no one is at home. "If there's no car in the parking slot, no clothes drying outside on a sunny day, curtains closed and no voice from radio or TV can be heard, then I would be quite sure that the residence is empty," he wrote. "The best way to keep people like myself from entering your home is to make sure that it looks like someone is at home, or ask a neighbor to keep an eye on the home, openly, so that a would-be thief will notice that the residence is being watched."
