Bus overturns on expressway, seven tourists, driver injured

A shuttle but carrying passengers between Naha Airport and a resort hotel in northern Okinawa fell on its side after it jumped from the road and turned on its side injuring all seven passengers onboard and the driver, in Nishihara, Monday.

According to police investigators, the bus was running on the expressway when it suddenly veered right and brushed against the steel guardrail. It then went off the road at the point where the guardrail ended turning on its side.

There were seven passengers on the bus. One of the passengers suffered a broken leg and pelvis, while others, including the driver suffered light injuries. All passengers are tourists from mainland.

When questioned, the 41-year-old driver told police that he had felt sleepy and dozed off while driving and that caused him to lose control. The driver told the police the shuttle bus runs between the airport and the resort on average 13 times each day.
