Date Posted: 2002-01-24

The Motobu Tourism Association on Jan. 17 sent the first cherry blossoms of the season to every airline operating out of Naha for transportation to the 11 airports around Japan that connect directly with Okinawa. 2002 marks the seventh time that the flowers have been sent around the country in an effort to promote Japanís first cherry blossom festival of the year, scheduled to be held on Mt. Yae from Jan. 19 to Feb. 3 as part of the islandís annual flower carnival. Association chairperson Keiko Kishimoto reports that more than half the cherry trees on the mountain are blooming, thus enabling excellent cherry-blossom viewing during the festival.
