Lilies in full bloom on nearby Ie Jima

Date Posted: 2005-04-28

Millions of white lilies are now in full bloom on Ie Island off the Okinawa northwest coast.

The blossoms, stemming from more than 200,000 plants, are on display as part of a Lily Festival running through May 8th at Ie Village Lily Field Park. The blooms are a bit later than usual this year, but officials say the timing is perfect for the Golden Week holidays.

Organizers welcome visitors to the 86,000 square meters park, featuring the lilies blooming against a background of crystal blue ocean waters and vivid orange sunsets. The festival began a week ago.

Festivities kick into high gear tomorrow, with a full weekend of entertainment promised. An amateur band contest is Friday, while Naha daiko drum team Manshukubushi performs on Saturday.
