Chinese restaurant is "Gate to Happiness"

Date Posted: 2005-04-19

A visit to Fuku Reung Mon in Naha's Wakasa entertainment district is a Chinese culinary experience.

It's a small restaurant that provides intimacy and a chance to soak up some culture which taking on an array of sauces created by owner Reijin Naka. She uses no oil for much of her healthy cooking, and virtually none for the rest, allowing the foods to blend with the palate and appreciate the intricacies of sweet, spicy and mild foods. Naka, who came to Okinawa from Taiwan ten years ago, handles most of the cooking, with a touch of help now and again from her Okinawan husband.

She keeps the menu small, so she can showcase the best Chinese dishes. Typically 10-12 dishes are offered, with gyoza, a rice paper wrap stuffed with nutricious vegetables and some meat. Everything's ala carte, and she's happy to make recommendations. Dishes average \500 each, and often integrate the delicate spicy tastes of ginger and soy sauce.

Some entrees recommended are the traditional fried rices, spring rolls and special "basash" horse sashimi, edame Asian string beans in a wonton wrapper and deep fried and served with a chili sauce, salad with tuna which is then dished up into a quesadilla style wrap, and a scrambled egg platter.

Draft beer is \500 and soft drinks are \300. Okinawa's traditional awamori runs \3,800~4,500 for a full bottle.

"Happiness in Coming" stems from the literal translation of Fuku Reung Mon, which means Gate of Happy Hope, wishing you a warm and wonderful dining experience. The restaurant is open daily except Sundays, 7pm ~ 1am.

Fuku Reung Mon is easy to find. Travel south on Highway 58 into Naha, turning right at Kumoji Crossing. Proceed west to Highway 83, and turn right. The restaurant is on your right, diagonally across from Family Mart.
