Date Posted: 2005-04-19

Everyone in Okinawa made a pitch to attract Inter-American Development Bank delegates on the island for an annual conference.

Okinawa City invited the visitors from 47 countries to a reception at its Southeast Botanical Gardens, and Yomitan Village staged an opera performance at Zakimi Castle ruins.

The castle ruins have been selected to be a World Heritage Site, and the opera itself was more exciting because of the luxurious performance site under the stars on a clear night with plenty of fresh air. More than 930 turned out for the performance, witnessing the Zakimi Castle illuminated an opera players in colorful costumes.

The opera told the tale of an Okinawan young man and his love affair with a young woman. The event was arranged by Yomitan Village, and also presented taiko drums and a myriad of traditional events and demonstrations to share culture with the foreign visitors. More than 550 of the delegates took in the displays, events and demonstrations.

The large conference, with more than 4,000 participants, required the delegations to spread out across the island to dozens of hotels, including several in Yomitan.
