Naha’s Kokusai Street to get some shades

Date Posted: 2002-05-23

Kokusai Street, one of the busiest shopping streets in Naha City and very popular among tourists is about to get a facelift of sorts. According to city planners, sidewalks on both sides of the street will be covered with yellow awnings that will cover the sidewalk areas. When finished, the awnings will be 1,207 meters long and three meters wide. In addition, 165 parasols will be assembled along the street. The work on the project will start from Palette Kumoji Intersection within this year, and is scheduled to be finished in 2005. The cost is ¥600 million, of which Naha City will pay a third with the rest being divided between the prefecture and the central government.

In addition, improvement plans include more greenery and benches for people to sit and relax along the street.

Another project on which the work has already started is moving the power lines that now hang from utility poles underground, a project that is funded by the central government as one of the soecial promotions for the economic development of Okinawa.

Kokusai Street, although still popular among tourists and locals alike has been steadily seeing its businesses to decline as people more and more prefer to drive to newer areas that offer more modern facilities and most of all, parking. Businesses operating along Kokusai Street hope that the awning and other improvements will eventually lead the people to rediscover the area.
