Range fire continues to burn; Kin mayor angry with Americans

Date Posted: 2005-04-07

A brush fire continues to burn in a field near the military’s Range 2 at Kin Town, and local officials are furious.

Mayor Tsuyoshi Gibu says “we’ve been protesting to the military about starting fires,” and asks “don’t you guys follow the manual? How are you going to react to this fire?

The fire began Monday afternoon at the military exercise area, and continues to burn. A Self Defense Agency officials says the fire was started from an unexploded bomb. They say U.S. officials took immediate steps to quench the fire using helicopters, but those efforts stopped as nightfall approached, allowing the fire to gain strength. The American firefighting efforts began again on April 6th.

Officials say the fire is still gaining momentum, with winds increasing. Everyone is worried, they say. Onna Village Mayor Fumiyasu Shikiya asks “how much of the woods, or green trees, or birds are we going to lose? Peoplels’ lives are going to be very much influenced by this fire.”
