Gangland shooting suspect still at large

Date Posted: 2002-05-23

One month after a shooting incident in Naha City, in which an Osaka-based gangster was shot dead while the car he was riding in was stopped at a traffic light, Police still has few clues as to the identity of the shooter.

Based on witness accounts, investigators have concluded that the hit man arrived at Okinawa at least two weeks prior to the shooting. Several people have witnessed that they saw the man on a motorcycle at the location of the shooting some two weeks earlier. That has enforced the police suspicion that the shooting was a part of a gangland war that has been simmering between Osaka-based criminal organizations for some time.

Immediately after the shooting Okinawa Prefecture Police formed a special task force to investigate the incident, but the fact that apparently the hit man was from outside of the prefecture, with no connections here has made the case a hard nut to crack.
