Three still are missing after kayaks overturn

Date Posted: 2005-04-01

A mother and her daughter are missing together with a kayak instructor after gale force winds struck Okinawa’s southern islands more than a week ago.

Coast Guard officials have been searching for the three since the March 23rd incident in waters off Iriomote Shima’s tiny islands, Taketomi Cho Shinjou Island. The mom and daughter were taking lessons from Taketomi Town’s tourist guide company owner, but never returned from the morning outing.

Helicopters were put into the air, and ships searched the area where winds were gusting to 10-12 m/s and waves were two meters high. After two days of searching, the kayak used by the mother and daughter was found about 117 kilometers away. Inside were a girl’s slippers, sleeping bags, notebooks, and a plastic bottle. The kayak was found upside down.

No sign of Makiri Mika, 39, and daughter Ryouko, of Yokohama, was found. Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force, Japanese Air Self Defense Force and Japanese Coast Guard are continuing the search with both ships and helicopters.
