New traffic law extends driver license validity

Date Posted: 2002-05-23

A change in Japanese traffic law taking effect June 1 will extend the validity of driver’s licenses to five years from current three when renewed. The new rules also allow one-month grace period from the license holder’s birthday for the renewal. Current rules stipulate that the driver’s license must be renewed by the holder’s birthday, and those who are found to drive even one day past the deadline are subject to a fine. The new rules make it also easier to renew the license. It will be possible to renew the license at any location within the country, not only at the license holder’s hometown. At the same time, the new rules stiffen penalties for serious offenses such as drunk driving, speeding and reckless driving.
