Renowned Australian author to lecture at Kubasaki H.S.Date Posted: 2005-03-25 Jen McVeity, who’s written nearly two dozen books including Dream Catcher and Shadow Seeker, will visit Okinawa in mid-April on a motivational speaking tour. Known for her vivid, realistic style in both narrative and dialogue, she’ll be adding a sense of humor as she conducts writer workshops on Saturday, April 16. The workshops will be at Kubasaki High School. The workshop is sponsored by the Okinawa Seaside Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. McVeity is Australia leader of the Society. Sessions are open to the general public, “for anybody who aspires to write and get published. One workshop runs 9:00~11:30am, while the second is 1:00~3:30pm. Aside from writing, McVeity has broadened her experiences by being a teacher, lecturer, Churchill Fellow and environmentalist. She’s a championship volleyball player, a circus trapeze performer, a rock climber and a skier on both water and snow. She says it’s important for would be writers to look at is “a writer is not just one thing”. McVeity’s workshops focus on practical, workable ideas and tips that will lead a writer to enjoying the labor, while enhancing pleasure. She says the practical skills encompass dialog, character development, plots, realism and those “all important attention-grabbing lines.” Registration may be made for the workshop through Kadena High School, Bechtel Elementary School, Lester Middle School or by contacting Carla Shank at 634-4469. McVeity will also speak to students during her Okinawa visit. Costs for the workshop are $25 for each of the two sessions (¥2,500). A $5 rebate applies to those registering for both the morning and afternoon workshops. |
