School fight injures one in knife attack

Date Posted: 2005-03-25

An after school activities session turned violent in a central Okinawa junior high school, sending a 13-year-old boy to the hospital.

The incident occurred a week ago during an early evening school activity. The Board of Education says the two youth were in a sports club after class, and were headed home when one suddenly attacked another with a cooking knife. The two were reportedly in a school corridor at the time of the stabbing.

Police say one boy suddenly attacked the other without warning, inflicting a 3cm wound inside the victim’s shoulder. The knife cut through the wounded youngster’s clothes and into the skin.

Police say the attacker had brought the knife from home, and had it hidden in his school uniform inside pocket. Authorities say the two had a history of fighting with each other. An investigation is continuing.

The local Parent Teachers Association is reportedly shocked, and the Board of Education has convened an emergency principals’ meeting to discuss steps and measures to protect students from future violence.
