Dolphin gets help from tire company

Date Posted: 2005-03-18

Fuji the dolphin found himself in distress several years ago, unable to jump because of a disease that struck his tail fin.

Decay caused the loss of about 75% of the fin, making it difficult to even swim. The dolphin, at Ocean Expo Park in Motobu, had a problem performing.

Dolphin experts were perplexed, exploring many unsatisfactory options before turning to Bridgestone Tire Company for help. Bridgestone chemists rallied to the cause, experimenting with various compounds that could create a synthetic tail for Fuji. A high quality silicon rubber tail was fabricated, and presented to the dolphin.

Fuji wasn’t impressed, fighting the fin at first. With steady rehabilitation by staff, the dolphin adapted though, and relearned the arts of swimming and even jumping. Ocean Expo officials say Fuji’s the only dolphin in the world with a man-made tail fin.

Now, two years later, Fuji gets high marks from spectators at the dolphin tank as he jumps two meters into the air during the 45-minute show. “In the beginning he was always always escaping,” says staff member Masaya Furugen. “I saw him and tried to the tail fin on, and he was patient enough. I love him.”

Ocean Expo Park officials don’t let Fuji perform every day, worried that the strain could be too much. Through March the dolphin with a manmade tail will perform on weekends.
