International banking conference begins on Okinawa in early April

Date Posted: 2005-03-18

The numbers are fewer than planners expected, but the International Development Bank Convention will begin April 10th in Okinawa.

Organizers had expected more than 5,000 delegates and staff from a dozen countries, but registration is now at 2,500. Of those, only 1,000 have made hotel reservations.

“South America is too far away from Okinawa,” said one planner. Only 29 media reporters have registered to come. Initial expectations were for 7,500 to participate in the three-day convention, including 2,500 from South America.

By comparison, last year’s Lima, Peru Convention had more than 7,000 attending. “We know there will be a lot of cancellations, because even in 2000 with the G-8 Summit the hotels had a tough time making a profit.” The spokesman says in some ways, the comparisons are equal. “We think this might be a minus for us.”
