New junior records set at weightlifting tournament

Date Posted: 2005-03-18

Akira Kouchi lifted 103 kilograms to set a new record in the 56 kilogram class at the JOC Junior Olympic Cup Weightlifting Championships.

The Nambu Industrial High School student performed the feat in the snatch category, setting a new high school record.

In the 62kg class, Tomishiro High School’s Katsuhiko Uechi also set a new high school record with a 154kg jerk. The action took place at Chiba Prefecture’s Yachio City Citizens Athletic Hall this past week.

On the girls side, another record setting performance came from Yayoi Tamanura of Tamishiro High School. She lifted 167.5 kilograpms to win the Championship.

Akira Kouchi had lifted 105 kilograms before, but the record wasn’t certified official during the January performance. He says it gave him the confidence going into this tournament though, so for him 103 kilograms was “nothing”. Reducing his weight to stay in competition category was the hard part, struggling to get down. “I did change my style which until today, had both feet bound together. Now I moved my legs 10 centimeters apart and that made my body very light.”

He says he’s going to attend Japan Physical Education University beginning next month, where he’s set on winning more records. “Look at me” and watch, he promises.
