February called ‘depressing’ with very limited sunshine

Date Posted: 2005-03-04

Okinawa residents experienced only 35 hours of sunshine in February.

Weather officials say February was dreary and depressing, with only a single day of real sunshine. It is the fourth worst month since records were kept starting more than a century ago.

The shortest amount of sunshine was in 1905, when there were only 29 hours of sunshine. February 2000 was close behind with 32.6 hours of sunshine.

Adding to February’s misery was only a single day without rain, and even that day the northern part of the island received. Rainfall last month totaled 169mm.

Lower than normal air pressure off the China Sea accounts for the rain and clouds. Okinawa was trapped between the high and low pressure fronts, causing the higher amounts of moisture.

Forecasters say March promises to be more of the same, although they think there will be a bit more sunshine.
