Teen golf whiz takes 2nd in Australia match

Date Posted: 2005-03-04

Okinawa’s Ai Miyazato rolls into this week’s Daikin Orchid Ladies Golf Tournament on the heels of a second place finish in the ANZ Australian Ladies Golf Masters Tournament.

The 19-year-old racked up a final two days in the tournament which ended Sunday, shooting 18 and 16 under par rounds, but was edged out by Australian Cari Webb, who picked up her third Masters Tournament victory. Miyazato had swept to victory in the South African Ladies Tournament earlier in February.

Miyazato called Webb “awesome. Her ability to ignore distractions is so great. I can’t.” She blamed her loss on herself, because “I was too much trying to attack the pin. That made me make mistakes.” The Higashi Village natives said she should play more to relax. “I know I have to study more about golf to be a champion,” she said quietly. “I cannot be a champion yet. Lady Webb is still my lifetime teacher, and I’m happy to be second best to her.”

Miyazato is a top seeded favorite in the Okinawa event which begins today. She’s home, and knows everyone is expecting her to be the champion in the event she won handily a year ago.

Her father says “This time she will be champion. She wasn’t focused before. I believe she has the confidence now.”
