Date Posted: 2005-03-04

Kouji Koyanagi won the Okinawa City sponsored Okinawa Marathon Sunday with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 48 seconds.

It was the third victory for the Nagasaki Prefecture man, who led 10,007 participants on the winding course through central Okinawa.

Claiming the trophy on the ladies side was Sayuri Kina of Nago City. The high school student ran the course in 3 hours, 2 minutes and 25 seconds.

A total of 6,993 ran the full 26 mile marathon, while another 1,138 opted for the 10 kilometer version. The 8,131 finishers made up the 77.8% completion rate.

The oldest full marathon runner was a 77-year-old Naha City man, Shinjiro Isa, who ran the course in 5:55:11. Sashiki Town’s 71-year-old Hatsuko Ishiha was the oldest woman to run the long course in 5:58:12. She told reporters “My time is going bad every year. I don’t like it.”

Ishiha is an annual entrant. She runs 10 kilometers every second day, and adds she “loves marathons. I will do it again next year.”

Shinjiro says “I had an accident at the 20 kilometer point. I fell down, but I didn’t stop.”

Course pacesetters worked to get everyone through the course in under six hours.
