Land sailing catching on as new Okinawa sport

Date Posted: 2005-02-18

A new sport is getting a foothold in Tomishiro City.

Land sailing literally uses the wind to power a sports cart, and the Tomishiro Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a drive to get new enthusiasts. The Japan Wind Cart Union is also joining forces to encourage people to try the new sport.

Some 25 citizens participated in the organizational lecture a few days ago; none have been involved in the sport before. Japan Wind Cart Union Chairwoman Kayoko Bamnout says “I want you to be ambassadors for the sport, and go to school and the local community and promote it in front of them.”

He encouraged them to become local Tomishiro champions, making dreams come true. February 26-27 have been set as a riding day, and an invitation to the public has been extended.

The first public trials will be at the Tomishiro Central Community Hall. This week’s event had riders falling down as they learned how to control the carts, which move quickly as the wind picks up.

“It’s so much fun to ride,” said one. “If you can read the wind direction or power, it will be easier to control.”
