Date Posted: 2005-02-18

A new search is under way in the Itoman area to locate World War II victims of the Battle of Okinawa.

The Spring 1945 battle lasted just over three months, and killed tens of thousands. The government is now determined to identify many of the remains still being found, and are using forensic experts to assist in the process.

Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare officials say the help is needed because, after 60 years, the process of identifying remains is extremely difficult. They note that in many areas, they donít even now how many of the bones being collected come from the same victims.
