Stores security stepped up after mainland baby death

Date Posted: 2005-02-11

The murder of an 11-month-old baby last week has sent local merchants scrambling to beef up security.

A deranged man in an Aichi Prefecture store snatched and killed the child on February 4. Local Okinawa supermarket chains are making sure they have the protection of their customers in order, increasing security systems.

JUSCO has increased the number of security cameras in their stores, play areas, restaurants and parking lots. They’ve also added more security patrolmen to watch both the screens and the customers. Special attention is focused on the childrens’ game areas.

Supermarket officials are cautioning the public to be more watchful of their children, urging they not be left alone during shopping trips. Home Center giant Sakumoto has produced strongly worded employee manuals teaching how to take care of customers, and how to be alert to strangers’ actions.

San A Supermarkets has intensified its security, now requiring staff to check all facilities within their buildings on a regular basis.
