Sports clubs competing for fitness customers

Date Posted: 2005-01-27

Sports clubs are big business, and competition is now making the quest for new customers are cutthroat endeavor.

The battle is spawning discounts, enrollment bonuses, special arrangements for increased services, and promises of better health and fitness opportunities than the other clubs. The clubs are drawing attention to the special unique Okinawan style aerobics, which mixes Eisa dance with traditional aerobics.

Sports clubs have become increasingly popular since industry giant Konami came to Okinawa. The Japanese owned company is well established, and does well in each community. A new facility opened just weeks ago on Highway 58 in Ameku.

Locally owned sports clubs have been around for a long time, and are now learning to compete against Konami. They’re finding the difficulties of competing against the giant in areas like advertising on radio and television, and in newspapers. Konami’s image is sophisticated, and its facilities are modern, rich and comfortable with the most popular sports equipment on the market today.

The locals are fearful. “Oh. Konami is going to take our customers all away. We can’t be lazy in getting new customers,” said one small sports club owner. Normal ¥15,000 enrollment fees are being dumped by some in an effort to attract new customers. Monthly fees are being cut, too.
The smaller Okinawa clubs are also upgrading their facilities to compete. New saunas and aroma spas are being added, hours are being extended, and additional customer services being offered at little or no charge.

Another tactic being employed by some smaller clubs is to work an alignment deal with Konami. Rather than compete, their working in tandem, providing some services at their small facilities, and sending the customers to Konami to use some of the expensive, high tech equipment.
