Kadena Gate 1 closing Tuesday for construction

Date Posted: 2005-01-27

A new visitor center and enhanced force protection and security installations will give motorists a new perspective starting Tuesday.

Kadena Air Base Gate 1 will close for five months to facilitate completion of the new visitor center, which will restructure the entrance area itself, adding a new traffic lane while widening others. The move will complicate entry to the sprawling air base, where popular Gate 2 is already closed for construction of another visitor center. Gate 2 closed three months ago, and is expected to remain closed to early summer.

Gate 4, on the south side of Kadena, will open this weekend as a 24 hours entry point. Entry through Gate 4 will put motorists on the northeast side of the base, next to the Combined Fleet Activities Okinawa headquarters. Gate 5, on the south side of the base near the schools, and Gate 3, by Chibana, are also open. Gate 5 is open during morning and afternoon traffic rush hours.

The 5,292 square foot visitor center under construction at Gate 1 will be completed in June. A smaller, 1,800 square foot visitor center at Gate 2, is projected to be complete in late August.
