Rainy season begins

Date Posted: 2002-05-17

Okinawa's rainy season officially began May 10. However, there has not been much rain to talk about, causing worries that water rationing measures might be imposed on the island for the first time in seven years.

According to Okinawa Meteorological Observatory, the rainfall this year has been only 40 percent of the average. The lack of rain has caused damage to crops. In Yomitan Village, vegetable farmers have had to fight an unusually large number of butterflies that have taken over their cabbage fields. In Miyako, swarms of grasshoppers threaten sugar cane. According to press reports some farming communities have gone as far as to enlist the help of 'yuta' or shamans to pray for rain.
