Adventurous snake finds way to 8th floor offices

Date Posted: 2005-01-20

A habu snake bites a medical student.

Not really news. A habu snake bits a medical student on the eighth floor of a university building. Thatís news.

It happened at Ryukyu University in November, and officials are still studying exactly what happened. A graduate student had ridden his bicycle to the school from his apartment, walked to an elevator and rode to the eighth floor. As he was getting off, he felt pain at his side and stomach.

He looked down at his backpack over his shoulder and saw a big habu snake watching him. The student threw the bag to the ground and immediately began administering himself first aide. Guards and fellow students were summoned to capture the habu, while the man was taken to a hospital.

He recovered and is back in school.

Officials are still trying to figure how the habu got to the building. One theory is that the snake was in the elevator. Another speculates the snake rode the bicycle, then slithered onto the man without his knowing. A third thought is that the snake somehow got into the studentís backpack.
