Military style ‘battle of the bands’ set for Sunday

Date Posted: 2005-01-20

The promise is ‘something for everyone’ at this weekend’s Music Festival 2005 in Okinawa.

The Sunday evening event involves the bands of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force, playing at the Okinawa Convention Center in Ginowan. Doors open at 6:30pm, with showtime at 7pm. The two-hour festival will feature combinations of Okinawan and Japanese music, showtunes, jazz and pop favorites.

Based at Camp Naha, the Combined First Brigade Band is the cornerstone of JGSDF music on Okinawa. The band, originally formed in Kyushu in 1972, moved to Okinawa in 1980.

The talented musicians most recently joined with the III Marine Corps Expeditionary Force Band for a concert in Okinawa City, and performed for the American Chamber of Commerce President’s Ball in Naha.

Entry is free. Reserved tickets are available by contacting the JGSDF. English line 637-7798, Japanese reservations 857-1155 Ext. 208.
