Rapist convicted on five separate counts

Date Posted: 2005-01-13

A 30-year-old rapist has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Naha District Court.

Takaya Tomoyose was convicted of raping five high school girls in early 2004. He admitted to raping one girl as she walked home, attacking her from behind. In the other four cases, Tomoyose entered homes and performed the rapes as the girls were sleeping.

While Tomoyose admitted to the five rapes, police say they think there were more. Asked by the judge why he did it, Tomoyose told the court “I couldn’t stop my sexual desire when I watch the porno movie or porno videotape.” He also admitted that two girls got away from him.

A women’s group is demanding more action from families and the public. “It’s only a few cases that are being published or taken to police,” an official says, because “people are trying to hide this kind of rape scandals because the girls or daughters families fear nobody will want to marry with the girls if they’re seen as ‘damaged ones’ or ‘used ones’ in the social world. That’s why they don’t want to talk about it.”

The spokesperson for the women’s group encourages families to do otherwise. “Please report the cases,” she says. “Otherwise, we can’t catch and convict the bad guys.”
