‘Coming of Age’ day a holiday on Monday

Date Posted: 2005-01-06

Turning 20 is a big deal in Japan.

In fact, it warrants a national holiday. Adults Day, called seijinshiki, is Monday, January 10th. It marks the day that 20-year-olds earn the right to vote, drink alcohol, be married without parental consent, and a host of other privileges.

There will be ceremonies at city offices, with people donning new kimonos for the festivities. Those kimonos cost upward of ¥1,500,000. Some buy them outright, while others make payments.

Police are calling for calm at this year’s Coming of Age Ceremonies. Last year’s ceremonies were marred by violent behavior .

Naha City, Ishigaki City, Onna Village, Miyako Island and other offices have arranged for ceremonies. They’ve promised an exciting time for the teens turning adult.
