Holiday fires destroy five residences, shops

Date Posted: 2005-01-06

Fire investigators are calling a pair of fires early New Year’s Day “suspicious” in Naha City.

Naha City Police say the two blazes happened almost simultaneously, close by each other. Five homes were destroyed, along with two stores. Other nearby shops were damaged by the blazes. Police suspect arson was the cause. No injuries occurred.

Investigators say one resident noticed smoke at 1:40am coming from wood trash and garbage piled in an open space near a building. Forty-five minutes later, only 200 meters away, another fire flared. That fire rapidly spread across the five residential buildings, then jumped on to the shops.

Neighbors said “we were watching television late, but somehow notice some smell coming down next door. I was very afraid that fire sparks are flying all over the area around the home.” “Oh, please don’t make my house catch fire,” said another as she prayed.
