Okinawa drivers lax in fastening seatbelts

Date Posted: 2005-01-06

A nationwide survey on automobile seatbelts use finds Okinawa behind the national average.

The October study by the Japan Auto Foundation (JAF) and the Metropolitan Police found 84.6% of Okinawa drivers using the safety belts. Unfortunately, that’s the second lowest statistic in Japan. Japan’s overall statistic is 90.7% using seat belts. The figure was worse for passenger seat belt use, where only 69.6% were buckling up. The nationwide average for passengers was 78.5%.

Okinawa Prefecture Police say “we are arresting people with unfastened seatbelts very strictly and giving fines to people. Still we never get 100% to fasten seatbelts.” The Prefecture has published pamphlets and done commercials appealing for seatbelts use.
