Date Posted: 2002-05-17

A young man who spread gasoline on the floors of the kitchen and then threatened to ignite the gasoline unless the staff gave him the contents of the cash register robbed a coffee shop in Shuri, Tuesday.

According to police investigation the man entered the shop with a bottle in his hand and went straight into the kitchen and made his threat. A staff member gave him the money from the register and he immediately left riding on a mini motorcycle. The coffee shop that is located in a quiet residential neighborhood had three customers and two staff at the time of the robbery.

Later on the same day the police apprehended Ken Takara, 24, an owner of a video rental shop on suspicion of the robbery. The police was able to spot Takara quickly because the staff at the coffee shop was able to give an accurate description of the clothes he was wearing, and even the license number of his mini bike. When the police apprehended Takara he still had the stolen money in his pocket. When questioned he immediately confessed. He said that he needed the money to pay back money he had borrowed.
