Tourist sub Mogurin to cease operations

Date Posted: 2002-01-24

Japan Underwater Tourism announced on Jan. 17 that its sightseeing submarine, Mogurin, based in Onna Village, would cease operations at the end of January. Twenty-six employees will be laid off the following month, and the company will be dissolved by the end of March. Company president Koichiro Shimoda said that the submarine had deteriorated but that the firm lacked the funds to refurbish it. He also noted that shutting down at the present time would cause the fewest problems in the long run. The Mogurin has been attracting approximately 36,000 tourists a year, although actual operating days were limited to about 200 due to poor weather. The company’s accumulated deficit totals around ¥350 million.
