Roughneck behavior injuring local teachers

Date Posted: 2004-12-24

Teaching has always been called an honorable profession. Now, teachers are calling it a dangerous one.

Teachers have always been looked up to by students, treated with deference and respect. This past week on Okinawa, teachers have become victims of student misconduct in a Naha Junior High School.

The first incident came after a teacher stopped a student not in class, asking “why are you here? You need to go back to your classroom.” The youngster’s response was to attack the teacher. The struggle was brief but intense, with the student slamming the teacher’s head into a wall, splitting his face and sending the teacher to the hospital. Multiple stitches were required to treat the teacher.

Another incident at the same school complex came when a 3rd grade student was stopped by a teacher for kicking and bullying a younger 1st year student. The boy, angry at being stopped by the teacher, beat him. The teacher, who was treated at a local hospital, required stitches to close his arm wounds.
