Terrorist concerns lead to special SAT Team

Date Posted: 2004-12-16

Okinawa is set to become the 11th area in Japan to have Special Armored Forces to protect against terrorist activities.

Japan’s Metropolitan Police Department made the decision to include Okinawa in the areas featuring the special anti-terror groups after analyzing increased threats and concerns. Officials say the terrorists are becoming more fixed on survival, and are becoming more desperate.

The SAT on Okinawa will concentrate on protecting American military bases. SAT units are currently located in Tokyo, Osaka, Kanagawa, Chiba, Hokkaido, and Fukuoka, with more than 200 troops in place. An official says the increasing number of hijackings and kidnappings is of concern.

Okinawa’s distance from the mainland makes it impractical to have SAT forces respond at the time of a terrorist incident. Now, there will be members of the riot police group here, with 20 more SAT policeman joining the team. An official says SAT members will be posted at military installations, observing people closely.
