‘Galleria’ Duty Free Store opens Wednesday in Naha

Date Posted: 2004-12-09

The new store is a first for Japan.

Galleria’s grand opening is Wednesday, and it is the first ever duty free store to be opened outside an airport. The second largest duty free shop in the world is located in Omoro-machi, on Naha City’s north side.

DFS Galleria features world famous brands in boutique settings, as well as restaurants to meet all tastes. This soft grand opening is being hosted by DFS, whose headquarters is in Hong Kong.
Galleria has hired 740 employees to run the store; 700 are Okinawans. At its official grand opening in March, the store will be named DFS Gallery Okinawa.

Company president Satoru Horikawa says “Global Dining from Tokyo, located on the third floor, is the highest ranked of the nine restaurants in the building.”

Special rules govern who can shop at the Galleria. Okinawa has “very special rules” within Japan, and that allows any passenger flying domestic or international to or from Okinawa to use the duty free store. Officials emphasize that anyone with a valid plane ticket can shop at Galleria, and the goods will be delivered to them at the airport.

Okinawans may browse the Galleria, and can use all restaurants and non-DFS shops without a ticket.
There will be free shuttle busses running from Naha City to the Galleria. DFS also will operate a rental car company, with a rental car depot as well.
