School classroom accident claims youngester’s life

Date Posted: 2004-12-09

Children are taught not to run in the schoolhouse.

They know not to run and roughhouse in the classrooms, where there are numerous obstacles that can be dangerous.

A third grade student at Ikei Elementary School on Ikei Island didn’t listen to the teachers’ warnings, and died this week in a bizarre accident. Nine-year-old Kaito Akamine was playing during a ten-minute class recess, running through the classroom.

He somehow crashed into a television sitting on a television stand, and it toppled and fell on top of him. Teachers immediately raced to his side, but the youngster was crushed and he had no pulse.

Doctors at the local hospital were unable to do anything. The boy never regained consciousness. Gushikawa Police have taken the television and stand, as well as videotapes with the boy’s blood on it, as evidence.

The school vice principal says “we have discussed with pupils the importance of safety and life, and why it is dangerous for students to run at school.” He reminded them that there was an earlier accident at another elementary school in Okinawa, where a boy crashed into a glass door and suffered head injuries. Teachers say the children are not careful enough.

Police are investigating to be sure the school did everything within its powers to prevent accidents.
