Money Matters

By: John Shepard

Every month I buy a lottery ticket here in Okinawa. The chance of me catching the big prize is about one in one billion. My brother says I'm foolish to waste money like that... but I tell him that if I don't buy a ticket, I definitely can't win.

My brother has always been a saver and it has paid off for him. He had money when he needed it to put their three kids through college, and he and his wife own a nice home in North Carolina, all paid for. His wife needed an expensive operation five years ago that wasn't completely covered by their health insurance and they had the cash for that too.

One of the big benefits of being in the U.S. military is that you have a steady income. You can plan ahead for the things you want. Saving and investing wisely are the keys to getting what you want when the right opportunity comes along.

Take a look at the chart above. If you get into the habit of regular saving, you will automatically have a big chunk of money when you're ready to retire.

They say that nothing in life is sure except taxes and death. Maybe we should add one more thing that is certain-being broke if you don't plan and save now. Your comments and suggestions are welcome. My email address is johnshepard@yahoo.com.
