Courtney Christmas Fest brings holiday season into full swing

Date Posted: 2004-12-09

Sleigh bells will be ringing, carols echoing across the Camp, and the scents of Christmas goodies will be everywhere across Camp Courtney this weekend.

The 10th Annual Camp Courtney Christmas Fest kicks off Saturday at 1pm in the Camp Courtney Commissary – PX area. The festivities run until 10pm, then repeat during the same hours on Sunday.

The Courtney Christmas Fest, sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services, has become the annual December event to look forward to on Okinawa, delighting Americans and locals alike with its festive holiday ambiance, free top-notch entertainment, game booths and amusement rides, a free “kiddie land” for the children, enough cultural foods to appease the heartiest holiday appetite, and the Christmas Fest mainstay—Santa’s Village.

Santa’s Village is sure to delight the young as well as the young-at-heart, consisting of five fun-filled houses where kids can enjoy a variety of holiday-themed activities. Houses include: Frosty the Snowman’s Igloo, Mrs. Clause’s Kitchen, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’s Stable, Santa’s Gingerbread House, and the Elves’ Workshop. Exciting activities in Santa’s Village include: decorating a Christmas cookie in Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen and making a holiday ornament in the Elves’ workshop—all for free. Be sure to bring your camera to take pictures of the kids with Santa, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer; or, a volunteer from the Single Marine Program can take one for you for just $1. In addition, a variety of exciting rides is sure to delight, including a giant slide, the round bounce, a parachute ride, an elephant maze, a Choo-Choo train, a sea of balls, and more.

Christmas Fest will kick off with AFN radio’s Wave89 DJs broadcasting live from the Christmas Fest site from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. During this live remote, one lucky person will win a 2001 Saturn! MCCS, Payless Motors, the USO, and Wave 89 have teamed up with NASCAR and are shifting into overdrive all the way up to Christmas Fest 2004. Twenty radio listeners and twelve people at the event will have a chance to win the car. Please visit www.mccsokinawa.com for complete contest rules.

And that’s not the only giveaway this year! Also at this year’s Christmas Fest, Marine Corps Community Services along with United Airlines and Omega World Travel will present a lucky winner with an extraordinary early Christmas gift—roundtrip tickets for two to any United Airlines gateway city.

No festival is complete without entertainment and this year’s Courtney Christmas Fest will feature a variety of free live entertainment for all ages, including live bands, DJs, and giveaways. Stop by the main stage to view cultural dance performances by Christmas Around the World. There will also be classic rock performances by Storm Watch and Dave Ralston. The III MEF Dixieland band will be performing as well as Trinity and Soul’d Out. And, you won’t want to miss the laser light show on Sunday night.
