New U.S. Ambassador Slated for Tokyo slotDate Posted: 2004-12-02 Thomas Schaeffer, 57, will replace Howard Baker, 79, who’s been the U.S. Ambassador to Japan for three years. Baker underwent heart surgery earlier this year, and it was announced by the White House several months ago that a change was coming. Schaeffer has limited Asia knowledge, but is favored by the President George W. Bush administration. He had strong contacts with the president in Texas. An official announcement will come within the next few weeks. Tokyo’s expectation is pleasure with the announcement, as the Prime Minister’s already indicated a desire for stronger relations with the U.S. |
