Numata named Japan’s Ambassador to Canada

Date Posted: 2004-12-02

A change if scenery is in order tomorrow for Ambassador Sadaaki Numata.

The veteran diplomat who’s served two years as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Ambassador to Okinawa is to be Japan’s new Ambassador to Canada.

Numata was to leave Okinawa in August, but was held in place following the August 13th crash of an American military helicopter in Ginowan. Numata says he “worked as a bridge between the local community and the military.” He reports to his new post December 17th.

Yuji Miyamoto, former Japanese ambassador to Myanmar, is to be the new Ambassador to Okinawa. Formal announcements will come later this month. A native of Fukuoka Prefecture, Miyamoto is a MOFA veteran who began with the government agency in 1969. He’s served in China, and was Ambassador to Myanmar since summer 2002.

He is the fifth Ambassador to Okinawa since the post was created following a crisis between Okinawans and the Japanese government in the aftermath of a rape incident in the mid-90’s.
