Police chase motorcyclist; injure woman in collision

A police chase through the streets of Okinawa City caused injuries to an innocent motorist when the police car crashed into the woman’s vehicle.

Police were chasing a motorcyclist on Highway 329 in the Ikehara area when the police car struck the woman’s car entering the roadway from a side street, breaking her leg. A policeman also suffered leg injuries.

Police say they were traveling 70kph when the collision occurred. They had come from Ishikawa City area from the Chibana intersection as they chased what they termed a “violent motorcyclist.” They say thre were 10 violent motorcycle groups racing on the streets and causing trouble. They say that’s when the chase began.

Police Chief Takashi Nakasone apologized to the young victim, saying “we are very sorry. Police didn’t do anything wrong. They were driving quite normal.” Authorities say the street was clear and visibility was good, with not much traffic.
