Candidates’ name poses A fair ballot challenge

Date Posted: 2004-11-26

Two candidates for village mayor have the same name.

Election officials are sorting through how to make entries on the Kitanakagusuku Village ballot so voters have a fair chance to make a decision.

Kaoru Kyan, the mayor, is a candidate. So is Kaoru Kyan, the businessman. The Election Administration Committee is weighing options on how to place them on the ballot. One will go as “Mayor Kyan” while the other is “Chairman Kaoru”.

The third candidate for mayor, Kunio Arakaki, is already crying foul. He claims all the publicity for the two other candidates has placed him in a terrible position. “Hey! It isn’t fair. It looks like I already lost and they already one. Using nicknames is wrong.” Arakaki’s calling on the election committee to decide which votes are good, and which ones aren’t. Already the election is being called a close race.

Kitanakagusuku is a small village which wraps around U.S. Marine Corps headquarters at Camps Foster and Butler, Chatan and the Awase Meadows Golf Course.

The name issue wouldn’t be a problem if elections were in Chinese, rather than Japanese. The Chinese characters for the two Kaoru Kyan candidates are different. Officials say elections aren’t conducted in Chinese characters because of the difficulty. Some people cannot write the Chinese way, and if a name is written wrong, the ballot is voided as spoiled.

Officials say there were various ways of pronunciation, so they opted to have the nicknames.

As the challengers complain, the system chosen “Mayor Kyan” as the moniker for the incumbent, who also has the real world nickname “Mayor Kaoru.” Everyone agrees about one thing, though. It is going to be an interesting election.
