Overnite housefire kills two, injures six in Haebaru Town

Date Posted: 2004-11-18

A father’s life turned to a nightmare early Monday when flames raced through the second floor of his Haebaru Town home, killing his two young daughters.

Masahiro Nakazato, 42, his wife and six children and his father shared the home, which burst into flame about 2:30am Monday, sweeping through the second story where the kids were sleeping. He and his father were sleeping on the ground floor when the fire began.

“Help me. I feel hot. Father, mother. Please come and help!” cried the children. A neighbor first heard the pleas for help and called the fire department. The adults escaped from the building, and began urging the kids to jump from second story windows. “Hurry children. Get out quickly. Quickly, come to the windows.”

Two daughters, ages 15 and 18, jumped to safety, as did a three-year-old son. The Nakazato went inside and rescued a five-year-old daughter, but was stopped from again going inside to rescue the remaining two children. Despite appeals “pleased don’t go inside anymore, you’ll get killed,” he entered again but the fire had spread and he couldn’t get near the girls’ bedroom.

The daughters, ages nine and 11, were later found by fire officials when the fire was extinguished.

Injuries to the four children, Nakazato, his wife and father, were mostly burns and lacerations. One suffered several broken bones.

Police are investigating. They say “there was a circulating fan heater in the room where the fire burned strongly.” A Nakazato family relative told officers the heater often made loud and strange noises.
