Head on crash leaves one dead, seriously injures four

Date Posted: 2003-07-11

A small van and a sedan collided head on Monday evening on the so called Ocean Road connecting Yonashiro Town and Henza Island on Okinawa’s west coast. The collision left the two passengers in the sedan in coma, one of which died hours later in the hospital, while the three people in the van were seriously injured.

According to Yonashiro Police, the driver of the sedan tried to turn right over an oncoming lane to a parking lot and obviously failed to notice the oncoming van and the two cars crashed head on. The passenger in the sedan, a 50-year-old woman from Gushikawa City bore the brunt of the collision and died later of her injuries in a hospital. The driver of the car, a 61-year-old man is hospitalized and remains in coma. The driver of the van and two high school students riding with him suffered multiple injuries and remain hospitalized.

As the police has been unable to question any of the surviving victims because of their injuries, they are asking possible eyewitnesses to contact Yonashiro Police Station and provide any information they may have into the circumstances of the accident.
