Ozato Village prepares sports festival feast

Date Posted: 2004-11-12

The menu called for soup. Soup to serve 1,200 guests.

The recipe for the Ozato Village sports festival last weekend specified beef soup, a village favorite. It called for one big kettle, 3.5 meters in diameter and 80 centimeters deep.

Add one cow. Cook slowly, together with mochi, a sticky rice.

One big cow was needed, with the recipe directing that all parts of the animal be used. Meat, bones, internal organs, skin and bones all go in the pot.

Only one problem faced the village; they had no giant pot. Instead, village leaders struck on an interesting solution. They decided to cook all the ingredients inside one large cow weighing 800 kilograms.

The cow was stuffed with 100 pieces of radish, 75 kilograms of carrots,, 7.5 kilograms of papaya, 75 kilograms of bordock, along with water, cucumbers and soy sauce.

Ozato village served the soup Sunday to its 1,200 festival participants and guests following a series of sports events and a tug of war. Everyone praised the soup for being juicier and tastier than any other soup they’d tasted. And they agreed no other village could match it.

They say they’ll do it again next year.
