Okinawa Awamori gains new American foothold

Awamori, Okinawa’s national drink, is taking the world by storm.

Two weeks ago the traditional Okinawa liquor made inroads into Paris, being imported to support restaurants. Now, the United States is the target, and awamori is hitting home.

Awamori International Co., Ltd., headed by president Randy Kuba and vice president Frances Kuba, has finally been granted approval and official recognition by the U.S. Government.

The smooth, clear liquor had to first pass inspection as an alcoholic beverage, and now it has. English labels are now being prepared for the bottles, to simplify American consumption. The goal is to have full distribution working by July 2005. The labels will also reflect the government authorizations.

The awamori inspections were accomplished in Honolulu, where local print, television and radio media seized on the new product. It’s being promoted as both a sipping drink and for use in cooking.
