Drunken GIís damage Okinawa City taxis

Date Posted: 2004-10-28

American servicemen stationed on Okinawa turned drunken behavior into separate incidents over the weekend.

Airmen assigned to Kadena Air Base were arrested by Okinawa City Police in connection with two separate vandalism acts against taxis. The two have been identified as Richard Franklin Thornton Jr., 27, and William Floyd Thorn II, 20.

Police say Thorn approached a taxi stopped at an intersection in Okinawa City shortly after 4am Saturday, then kicking in the door. He was observed and immediately arrested. He told police he did it because his fingers were caught in the door.

A few minutes earlier, Thornton had picked up a tire and tossed it at a taxi, also in Okinawa City. Damage was limited to a windshield wiper. The GI explained he was angry that the taxi, which already had a passenger, refused to stop and pick him up.
Police say both men were under the influence of alcohol at the time of their crimes.
