DNA ties American to Chatan rape case

Date Posted: 2004-10-22

Modern technology teamed with good, old fashioned police work to track a man wanted in connection with alleged rape in August.

The attempted rape occurred in Chatan August 22nd, when a woman was assaulted by a man who entered the home through an unlocked door. She told police the door was unlocked because her mother had not yet returned home. The rape was immediately reported, and critical evidence typical of rape cases, including DNA, was taken.

Dag Thompson, 34, is now in custody of the Naha District Public Prosecutor’s Office. He is an AAFES car sales employee. The investigation had been ongoing by Okinawa Prefectural Police. Thompson denied the charges, telling police “I’m innocent. I live in Naha City. Why would I go to Central Okinawa in the early morning hours? I was home.”

Thompson initially denied ever being in the area of the rape, but now admits to being in the Chatan area after police confronted him with photographic evidence of a traffic violation through one of the automatic speed radars.

Thompson’s DNA is also linked to another rape, dating back to 1999. Police screening the DNA discovered the body fluids matched the earlier rape.

Police didn’t agree, and used the DNA evidence to track down Thompson.

The case is triggering massive protests by a range of government officials across Okinawa to the Japanese Government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs North American Bureau Director Ebihara lodged a protest with Acting U.S. Ambassador Michael Maharak, calling the incident “extremely regrettable”, while MOFA Ambassador Sadaaki Numata made his complaint with Brigadier General James Flock, telling him there needs to be “discipline and preventive measures” taken to protect citizens from personnel connected with the military establishment in Okinawa.

Governor Keiichi Inamine called the rape “a heinous crime”. He said it is unforgivable.
