‘Dangerous’ helicopters moving to Iwakuni AB

Date Posted: 2004-10-22

A group of CH-53D helicopters, the same model that crashed onto the Okinawa International University campus in August, will be moved from Okinawa to mainland Japan.

Iwakuni City in Yamaguchi Prefecture has accepted the military aircraft transfer to Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station. Five helicopters will make the move to Iwakuni.

The helicopters are flying again, after having been grounded during an investigation as to the cause of the August 13th crash. An error involving a bolt on the tail rotor assembly was blamed on maintenance, and officials assured the Japanese government the problems have been fixed.
